Today’s American diet is woefully inadequate when it comes to nutrition, for the most part. Nonetheless, there are a number of so-called “nutritional superfoods” where you really get the most bang for your buck when you eat. You might be surprised at what some of them are, too. Let’s take a look at five of them.

1) Acai Berry

This amazing little Berry has made recent headlines as pretty much a perfect food. There’s a problem with it yet, in that it’s difficult to get, but nutritionists and marketers have jumped on the bandwagon by making it available in supplement form it. Rich and amino acids, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, putting acai berries in your diet (even in pill form) is one way to get a supercharged nutritional start.

2) Cruciferous vegetables

Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and others in this family all have amazing anticancer properties and are super packed with fiber and nutrition, too. Better yet, though, they contain so-called “phytochemicals” that are really beneficial to us. Two of them, indoles and isothiocyanates, are what give cruciferous vegetables their cancer-fighting properties. (Hint: If you really, really can’t stomach any type of cruciferous vegetable, try grinding a couple of servings up very, very fine and including them in something else you like to eat, like meatloaf, for example. You’ll never know the difference but you’ll still get the benefits.)

3) Omega-3 fatty acids

Fish oils are among the most touted super foods today, but there’s a reason for it. You see, at one point, our ancestors got plenty of omega-3 fatty acids just because the cows THEY ate lunched on plenty of omega-3 fatty acid-rich grasses; and they got fat slowly, over time. Today’s cows are grain fed and sent to slaughter very quickly, so they don’t have the same type of balance in the meat they produce. Unfortunately, this leaves us in the cold because we need these oils. Get a serving of oily fish like salmon two or three times a week; if you can’t stomach fish, pop two or three fish oil capsules a day instead.

Buy Omega 3,6 & 9 1000mg Capsules.

4) Coffee

Yep, that morning cup of joe is packed with antioxidants and may actually help stave off things like liver cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, too. If caffeine is a problem for you, try decaffeinated or simply cut back. One or two cups a day will do it for you as far as the benefits it provides. More than that can make you anxious, nervous, jittery or have other problems.

5) Chocolate

Okay, we have to have a little fun here, too. But it’s true; modest amount of dark chocolate (not milk chocolate) has significant amounts of beneficial flavonoids and antioxidants, two great anti-aging, anticancer substances, plus it’s high in the “good” fats. Don’t overdo it; an ounce a day is all you need, and more than that may make you gain more weight than you want to (and of course you have to watch the sugar). But go ahead, kick back and have a little fun even while you’re being good. Not bad, right?
