This is probably the most frequently asked question I get about acai berries -- where can I buy fresh acai berries.

The short answer… Brazil.

Acai berries grow in the Amazon rainforest and nowhere else. And while a banana grown in South American can make it safely to the United States ready to be eaten, acai berries can’t be imported.

They simply spoil too quickly -- even faster than strawberries -- with a shelf life of just 24 hrs once harvested.

That’s why in the U.S. and most other countries, you’ll have to get your acai berries in juice, pill, capsule, or frozen pulp form.

But I’ve been told that it’s well worth the visit to Brazil to get your hands on the berry fresh. I had a friend visit recently and he almost didn’t come back, he enjoyed it so much.

This is probably the most frequently asked question I get about acai berries -- where can I buy fresh acai berries.

What are the Benefits of Acai Berry?

The Acai berry of the Acai palm tree is a fruit found growing mainly in South America, covering Brazil and Peru primarily. 90% of it if formed of seed pit and the rest 10% is pulpy. The fruit has an extremely high fat content due to which its life after harvesting is very short. Hence, it is mainly preserved by freezing it, making it into a pulp or even in powder form.

The frozen and powdered form of this berry is said to be rich in protein, fiber, calorie, vitamins A and C, calcium and iron. Acai berry in its powder form is a strong antioxidant against superoxide and hydroxyl radicals. Its juice is a stronger antioxidant than red wine, orange juice and tea. Anthocyanin, the antioxidant found in this fruit is extremely beneficial to the health. It is the highest valued edible berry in the world according to ORAC.

Consuming Acai berry in most of its forms improves the functioning of the digestive system and helps stimulate brain responses. The fiber content of the berry detoxifies the body effectively. This leads to healthier and more radiant looking skin.

Due to its protection of the nervous system it helps diagnose neurological illnesses. It reduces the chances of cancer, the protein content of it is higher than that of eggs, the circulatory system also benefits from it and it is also believed to improve the libido. It reduces inflammation and is very good for diabetic patients.

Oprah Winfrey says about the Acai berry: “This little berry is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world. It can often be found in juice form in health food and gourmet stores.” No wonder it is considered to be the new age power food.

Since it is very rich in organic vegetable protein, it is an active fighter of cholesterol in the body. Acai berry synergizes the monounsaturated fat, phytosterols and fiber; it stimulates the cardio vascular and digestive tract. The fatty acids present in this tropical fruit are as good as those found in olive oil. This lowers the chances of heart disease. The omega three fatty acids help in cell regeneration and supporting the nervous system. Its vitamin E content also fights internal signs of aging.

The best part of consuming the Acai berry is that it can be done in many forms. You can eat the berry as a fruit, or make it into a pulp or even have it in its powdered form. Acai berry can be used to make frozen yogurt, mixed with other fruits to make smoothies and even milkshakes with the powder.

Acai is high on energy and antioxidants due to which athletes swear by this berry. Another positive side of having this fruit is that it is economical instead of spending loads of cash on expensive protein shakes, energy supplement capsules and drinks you can easily opt for this natural power food instead. It is also more easily available than it was before.

What are acai berries and why are they good for you?

Natural health is an interesting sphere of learning, especially about the things you eat every day. If you are interested in it, you may be interested too, in learning about the acai berry.

The acai berry is almost the size of a grape. It grows on a tree that is native to the Amazonian rainforests. This fruit has been harvested for years in a multiple civilizations that have had their homes in the region.

The acai, in fact, is an integral part of the diet of the natives of this area (it makes up nearly 80% of it). Of late, the acai berry has become very well accepted in the United States and other neighboring developed countries because of its fascinating benefits to health.

The pulp of the acai berry is just about 90% of the berry. Most of the berry is made up of the seed and the pit. It is interesting to note that the acai berry lasts only about 24 hours after it has been picked. Following this, it begins to spoil. This is one reason why it has taken so long for it to travel outside the area where it is indigenous and reach the confines of the developed world. Nowadays, it is consumed by people who are aware of its nutritional benefits. Good transportation facilities and new, improved ways of packaging the product for shipping have made this possible. Some acai products have been developed that are quite worthless, but this is not true of most. We will share more information on this later.

The acai berry is considered a delightful food where it is grown. It has been proved that it contains more antioxidants than almost any other fruit of its kind. It actually contains 500% more antioxidants than regular blueberries. As legend goes, the acai berry can cure or at least help a range of ailments ranging from impotency to cancer. It is a quick and effective source of energy for anyone who consumes it regularly.

You might not think much of the taste of this fruit, but the acai is really delectable, the taste being somewhere between a punch of berries and chocolate. It has become more favored by many as a drink than wheatgrass.

You might want to try the acai berry soon, but watch out for a few warning signs. Not all acai berry products are good for you, and some are made by such processing as to rob the product of most of the nutritional qualities of the acai. Try to make sure that the product you are choosing has been designed through minimal processing.

The acai berry is ideal for anybody who is looking to add some antioxidants to their diet. Its other health benefits are remarkable too. It is a very old fruit that is just beginning to make a foray into the developed western world. One thing we can assure you of: you will be hooked to this fruit as soon as you have tasted it for the first time.

When it comes to the Acai berry it may be hard to believe that there would still be people out there that are unfamiliar with the berry. Even though not everyone may know full well what this berry is supposed to do for people, they have probably heard of this particular berry before.

This is probably due to the fact that the Acai berry has been featured on Oprah, The Today Show, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and The CBS Early Show. With so much hype out there about this Acai berry, is it all worth it? Does this particular berry do anything for people? Some consider this blueberry-sized fruit the miracle berry.

The Acai is indeed a high antioxidant fruit, which has levels that are twice the amount of blueberries. It is also rich in healthy Omega fats, which our bodies need. Along with being rich in Omega fats, the Acai berry is rich in Protein and Amino Acids. But what can this little berry do for the average person?

It is healthy of course but what can this little berry do that would give people the idea that it is a miracle berry? The facts are clear and easy to see. It has been shown that when the Acai berry is taken in the right manner, over the correct amount of time, that it helps to maintain healthy function of the organs in people. There will also be an increased energy level, stamina, and libido that will benefit those taking the berry.

It also acts as an anti-inflammatory and it supports a healthy immune system. Along with giving people healthy sleep they may also experience better skin and hair texture. But it does not stop there. With so many studies going on with the Acai berry and its effects and benefits on the human body, many researchers are starting to believe that there may be a link between this berry and reduced cancer cells in patients. While there is no conclusive evidence as of yet, tests are still being ran.

Now that you know that this berry is so good for you, you are probably wondering how it tastes. After all things that are good for us generally taste bad, right? Wrong. The Acai berry has a delightful berry taste with a subtle hint of a chocolate after taste. So what is stopping you from heading straight to the grocery store and picking up some fresh Acai berries? Your geographic location is.

Unless you live right in the middle of the Amazon Rainforest you will not be able to get your hands on true fresh Acai berries. While there is many ways people can get the benefits from the Acai berry, it is not going to be from eating a fresh berry.

The berry spoils within twenty-four hours of being picked. So shortly after being picked from the Acai Palm tree this fruit goes bad. This is why so many people reply on Acai supplements to get the desired results that they crave.

History of the Acai Berry

Acai berries may be fairly new to the diet and medical world of the northern hemisphere, but the people in the Amazon have long been using this amazing super food for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. Used mostly as a delicious addition to the native diet and to treat skin blemishes and promote digestive health, the acai berry is nothing new to the native tribes of Brazil and the Amazon rainforest.

Unfortunately, is has not been until fairly recently that people outside the Amazon became aware of the acai berry’s amazing abilities. In recent years the super food has been grown and exported from the Amazon at a phenomenal rate, which is only increasing as acai?s popularity grows. We are fast approaching the point where acai products can be purchased on the shelf of nearly any supermarket or grocery store? a far cry from just a few years ago when no one had even heard of the stuff.

The important thing to note about acai is its very short lifespan. From the moment the fruit is picked, you only have about 24 hours until it loses its beneficial properties, so until recently that limited acai?s consumption to a small radius around the area in which it was harvested.

Acai’s commercial popularity actually began with Brazilian surfers who used it as a smoothie additive to help regain their energy through a hard day of surfing. From there its popularity spread until acai smoothie stands peppered the beaches of Brazil, touting their product as a natural energy booster as well as its viagra like abilities.

From there researchers got a hold of the fruit and began testing the claims the surfers and local peoples made about its incredible properties. Lo and behold, most of them were not only true, but vastly understated! Those little purple berries, in addition to tasting great and being packed with energy, were also found to be absolutely bursting with vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and antioxidants, which can help fight and even prevent cancer.

As word spread about its incredible abilities, people began working out ways to preserve the acai berries for a longer shelf life so they could be enjoyed outside of the Amazon and Brazilian beaches. Now a days it can be found in many different forms, such as juices, pulps and purees, in addition to being used as an additive in candies, drinks and an almost infinite variety of dietary supplements. It is sold in grocery stores, health food stores, gyms and doctor?s offices, and has even been featured on Oprah. Quite a ride for something that just a few decades ago had never even been heard of outside remote areas of the Amazon.

Where do Acai Berries Come From?

Up until about ten years ago, no one had even heard of acai berries outside some of the more remote areas of the Amazon Rain forest in South America. In fact, the native peoples of the Amazon have been using the acai fruit for thousands of years to treat skin blemishes and digestive disorders, not to mention as a tasty addition to their everyday diet.

Eventually word got out to the local population of Brazil living outside the rainforest and spread to the Brazilian beaches through a boom in smoothie sales. That’s right, surfers figured out that those tasty little purple berries made for a perfect addition to their revitalizing smoothies and were perfect for regaining your strength through a long hard day of surfing. Soon these little smoothie stands turned into something of a big business for Brazilian beaches and the word spread.

From there research scientists got involved in an attempt to discover if the little purple berries were really all they were said to be. Their results are still rippling throughout the scientific community today. As it turns out, the benefits of acai berries were actually more than a little understated.

Acai is incredibly rich in antioxidants, a key ingredient in the fight against cancer and aging. They battle free radicals your body is exposed to through stress and exposure to pollution, and help revitalize your body?s systems. They are also chock full of vitamins and minerals and other nutrients, as well as having the same essential fatty acids as olives. This means they help boost your good cholesterol levels as much as the olive oil rich Mediterranean diet, and even has many of the same heart healthy benefits as red wine.

From there the word spread and acai berries could soon be found on health food store shelves across the world as people figured out how to increase their shelf life from the original 24 hours to an almost indefinite amount of time through the use of processing methods, preservatives and good storage practices. While the acai berry may have originally come from the Amazon rain forest and Brazil, they can now be found almost anywhere in the world in a wide variety of nutritious and tasty forms.

Perhaps you’ve been reading the news and noticed all the hype about acai lately. It has kind of been hard to miss if you are reading the right sections of the newspaper or you ever turn on Oprah. Acai berries have been named the number one super food by both Oprah and the New York Times, and have been attributed a whole slew of incredible properties up to and including possibly being the cure for cancer. Quite a lot for an unassuming little purple berry from the rainforests of Brazil.

The first thing people think of when they talk about acai berries is their incredible antioxidant count. Did you know that acai berries have at least ten times the antioxidants of the next best fruit? That makes them the highest ranked antioxidant packing natural substance yet known to man.

Antioxidants are important in a couple of ways. When your body’s cells die they release a signal to your white blood cells to come and dismantle them, carting off all the remains. Sometimes though, those white blood cells can’t get there in time and the cell dies on its own, releasing all sorts of little bits and bobs into your body.

These bits can include what are known as free radicals. There are also other ways in which you can acquire these free radicals, including pollution, exposure to harmful substances or, according to some, even cell phone signals and radio waves.

Anyway, free radicals are unstable molecules that go around looking for something to steal atoms from to make themselves stable again, and unfortunately, the thing they most often go for first is your DNA. When free radicals steal from your DNA this causes the sequence to malfunction, resulting in mutation and often cancer.

A very similar process is also what causes aging. Scientists are pretty sure that without these free radicals, there would be no such thing as aging past a certain point. Ok, here’s where antioxidants come in. These molecules have the ability to bond with the free radicals, giving them something else to glom onto instead of your genetic sequences, or in other words, fewer carcinogenic mutations.

In addition to antioxidants, acai berries are also jam packed with fiber, which is crucial to proper digestion. They also have a ton of phytosterols, which are the building blocks for the cells which make up many of your digestive membranes, and essential fatty acids, which are crucial for proper organ and brain function.

When you factor in acai’s huge array of other vital vitamins and minerals, it’s like taking a whole day?s worth of vitamin and diet supplements, all in one tasty purple chocolate laced berry flavored snack.
